The Hartbeespoort Dam lies about 35 km west of Pretoria and is situated in the Magaliesberg mountain range. Johannesburg is about 90 km away from here. The dam was built in 1923 and is a popular getaway spot for a weekend or just a day trip for residents of Pretoria and Johannesburg.

The public market is a very popular spot to shop for African art including sculptures, baskets, leather goods, wooden tables, etc.
On the Brits side of the dam wall you can find formal and roadside markets. The southern side of the dam is far less developed and has some interesting, quaint spots like the home of well-known journalist, author, and historian, Gustav Preller, which is now a national monument and restaurant.
